Michael P. Oxley – Passed away peacefully on February 11, 2009 at the age of 62 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born on December 24, 1946 in Honolulu. Mike was raised in Kaimuki on Crater Road until he was twelve when the family moved to Ewa Beach where he graduated from Waipahu High School. He later received his Business degree from the University of Hawaii in 1968. At both institutions, Mike was an outstanding student and athlete. He played baseball for both schools as well as for the Ewa baseball team in the AJA league. While at the UH, he was a member of Phi Kappa Pi fraternity and also joined the Air Force ROTC program. Upon graduation, he served as an officer in the United States Air Force from 1968-1972 and was stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam conflict. After his discharge, Mike began a long career in the commercial insurance business, retiring from Marsh & McLennan in 2005 after nearly 30 years in the field. Over the years, he mentored and helped many young men and women develop in the business to where they are among the local industry leaders today. Mike also worked closely with many of Hawaii's contractors and developers, providing them with the bonding and general insurance to successfully complete many projects in the state. If Mike had a passion for anything in life, it was sports. He loved any athletic event and was a die hard UH fan, regardless of the sport. He was also an avid golfer and a member of the Waialae Country Club for many years. He carried a single digit handicap and was recognized as one of the better golfers in the club. He is survived by his son Aaron (AJ) Oxley; parents James and Eleanor (Takahashi) Oxley; sister, Mary Kondo (Gary) and brother James Oxley III (Takako). Also, nieces Michelle Ho, Masako Oxley, nephew Kevin Kondo, aunties, uncles, cousins, wonderful friends and Morgan, his beloved dog. Betty Miranda Parrish - Passed away on June 21, 2003. John Ynigues - 1996, age 50 - Photo of me and John in Aberdeen, Maryland, Sept. 1964, Track Wheel Training School 63B10. Farewell to our brada "Giggy" from Dennis Panerio - The last time I saw Giggy was in Germany, we were stationed about 250 miles apart. I was in Stuttgart Patch Barracks and I can't remember the name of the town John was stationed at. My job at Patch Barrack which was headquarters for the 7th Army, I was the heavy equipment operator and used to take different types of equipment all over Europe. Whenever I go or get close enough to where Giggy was stationed, I always stopped over to see him. Back in March 1967 I was dispatched over to Giggy's outpost. I spent the weekend with Giggy and at that time we talked about us getting close to being rotated back to Schofield Barracks to get discharged, honorable one that is. At the time he loved it over there and told me that he was going to renounce his American citizenship and become a German National. I don't know if he did that but I know that John did get a European discharge. John died in Germany the same year we were in Las Vegas celebrating our WHS '64 50th birthday bash. Although John and I had our differences over the years, I loved that man. It's hard for me to stop the tears as I write this letter cause I remember vividly our last goodbye. I can still picture John and me in the post bar the last night we spent together. Please at this moment we all need to say a prayer for our lost brother, friend and classmate. Brother John, may you rest in peace. |
